In general terms, computer software is defined as a collection of computer programmes, procedures and documentation that performs some tasks on a computer system. The term includes application software such as a word processor which perform productive task for users, system software such as an operating system, which interfaces with the hardware to provide the necessary services for application software, and middleware, which controls and co-ordinates distributed system.
Computers cannot do any useful work without instructions from the software; thus a combination of software and hardware is necessary to do any computerized work. A program must tell the computer each of the tasks to be performed, in a framework of logic, so that the computer knows exactly what to do and when to do it.
